This course combines the Art of Problem Solving (AOPS) prealgebra curriculum with the Russian approach to mathematics. It covers variables, equations, inequalities, fundamentals of number theory, fractions and decimals, ratios, rates, percents, positive and negative exponents, an introduction to geometry, and an introduction to counting and probability.

The AOPS approach allows children to discover mathematics rather than passively receiving information from the teacher. This process of discovery makes learning exciting and ensures that children "own" the newly acquired knowledge.

The Russian approach emphasizes connections between mathematical topics. It develops analytical skills and helps the children appreciate the commonalities between different types of problems. This allows the students to understand the structure of mathematics as a whole and appreciate its beauty. The Russian approach also involves a continuous review of past topics, facilitating learning and promoting long-term retention and mastery of the material.
